The annual Institute of Food Technology (IFT) Show in Chicago is like a trip to Willy Wonka’s laboratory for anyone in the food industry. Thousands of food industry professionals from around the globe gather at McCormick Place in Chicago to see the latest innovations in products and equipment.
Charlie Arnot represented The Center for Food Integrity (CFI) at the event in a panel discussion on effective strategies to communicate “the science” about food safety to consumers and regulators.
“Most of those who attended had deep technical backgrounds,” said Arnot. “The concept of engaging first with values, and then introducing science was new to many, and very well received.”
In addition, Donna Moenning participated in a panel on behalf of CFI. For the session “How Do We Teach Students About Controversial Topics in the Food Industry?” she presented on the importance of shared values and how to communicate them effectively.
“I underscored that we are not suggesting science be dismissed. It continues to be imperative. Think of shared-values as the front porch and the door that opens the way for more meaningful conversations about important food conversions,” said Moenning, who leads seminars on how to engage in conversations about food.
Dr. John Coupland, president elect of IFT and professor at Penn State University, also talked about the importance of values and how conflicts about food are often conflicts of values. Read more about the session at Food Business News.
